| An
abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed
for the purpose of removing excess, redundant
abdominal wall skin and lipomatous tissue,
and tightening the muscular abdominal wall.
The procedure is usually performed on women
from ages 25 to 55 but can also be performed
on men within the same age group. The surgery
takes two hours to perform and can be performed
either as a daycare procedure in the private
clinic or as an inpatient procedure in the
hospital. The procedure is not designed as
a means of weight loss but rather is designed
to contour the abdomen following significant
weight loss, post-partum skin stretching or
concentrated fatty tissue in the abdominal
area. The procedure is performed for aesthetic
reasons only and is not considered to be a
benefit of the Medical Services Plan. In our
practice, we find that recovery from the surgery
varies slightly from patient to patient but
it is generally 4-6 weeks before you are able
to resume regular daily activity. The scar
from the surgery can easily be covered up
with bikini underwear and can take up to six
months to soften up, flatten out and return
to normal skin colour. Our patients generally
experience a renewed feeling of self confidence
following the surgery and find that they are
able to wear clothing that they were not able
to wear prior to the surgery. Patients do
not necessarily find that they wear a smaller
size in clothing but rather they find that
their current clothing now fits and looks
better. |
